KITCHEN COSMETICS RECIPES

Long before women had cosmetics counters in department stores, they knew how to whip up beauty products at home. You can too. These recipes will make great gifts for showers or holidays, and they are a great way to pamper yourself. Enjoy.

Gardeners’ Hand Cream
Use a microplane to grate up a beeswax candle, or buy one at a craft store.

1 cup grated beeswax*
1/2 cup jojoba oil
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
2 tablespoons vitamin E oil
1/2 cup sweet almond oil
9 drops EACH: peppermint and orange essential oils

Combine grated beeswax, jojoba oil, and aloe vera gel in the top of a double boiler or in a glass measure in the microwave. Melt (about 45 seconds in the microwave, up to 3 minutes in a doubled boiler). Remove from the heat and whisk until cool, adding vitamin E oil and essential oils as it begins to thicken. Spoon cream into a jar, cover and store in a cool, dark place.

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Lemon Toner

Linda Eckhardt’s Carrot and Cream Beauty Mask

This is the absolute best. When we did this in cooking school, women from 28 to 82 were amazed at the improvement in their skin with a simple 20 minute treatment. It’s wonderful.

1/2 cup heavy cream
1 organic carrot, cooked until tender and drained
3 T honey
seltzer water

Combine cream, carrot, and honey in the food processor and puree, then pack on the face while it’s still warm. Leave it on 20 minutes. Splash off with Seltzer. Refrigerate leftovers. Reheat in the microwave and use daily until its all gone. (about 4 days supply).
